Supporting behavioural change towards solid waste management within rural communities

Challenge

Looking to invest in a program to benefit its communities, Al Ahram Beverages Company (ABC) set out to do a community needs assessment in the Kafr El Azazy village in Sharqeya, where its factory is located, with the goal of using the findings to design a relevant and practical social investment program.

Approach

CID conducted a community needs assessment in Kafr El Azazy with a comprehensive and participatory approach for data collection, as well as stakeholders' mapping and analysis to identify potential partners and community leaders. Based on the results of the community needs assessment, CID designed a social investment program addressing the village's solid waste management in alignment with ABC's sustainability team.

A governance framework was also designed for ABC to support the implementation of the program with key civil society and community partners that carry out on-ground support. The framework also outlines roles and responsibilities, and communication lines between the ABC team and its on-ground partners to ensure a robust and sustainable implementation approach.

Once the social investment program was launched on-ground by ABC after purchasing a garbage truck, CID supported ABC and the local NGO in preparing for community outreach to educate stakeholders on solid waste management and promote social and behavioral change.

Results

As a result of the thorough community needs assessment conducted, CID was able to initiate and build a dialogue between ABC and its communities in Kafr El Azazy. This was the foundation for a tailored social investment program designed in a participatory manner with community stakeholders and ABC addressing the real needs of the village. To ensure sustainable implementation of the social investment program, a clear governance framework was established with defined roles and responsibilities of both the implementing NGO and of ABC.

Additionally, a messaging framework around solid waste management was created to serve as a guiding document for community engagement and communication that the local NGO would carry out to raise awareness among the community.

Following the design phase of the social investment program and the messaging framework accompanying it, CID designed and held two workshops with NGO members to train them on how to conduct community outreach and social behavioural change with the supporting messaging. To further support the NGO with awareness raising activities, CID also developed creative content for communication tools to be shared by ABC and the local NGO in schools and within the community to educate them on proper disposal and management of solid waste.
